Evaluation Question 7 - Looking back at the Preliminary Task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

During the filming of our preliminary task, we were told to focus on using different types of angles and shots, in order for us to have an understanding of how it is to film, and what makes a film perfect with their use of shots. Whilst filming for both preliminary and production, we learnt about different shots used in films, from which angles and how. At the times, we decided to use a variety of different shots, different to the preliminary because this was the real project and to make it look more professional, we used different shots.

Shot Reverse Shot

This was used in both preliminary and production filming, it was used when there are two people facing each other having some sort of interaction on screen. It was used during the preliminary when I was talking to a younger student about A levels. It was also used during the Grindylow, when Percy's boss arrives out of nowhere and tells him by hand gestures, to speed up his work.

From The Grindylow

180 Degree Rule

We used this in the preliminary task when I was sitting talking to a young girl about what A levels I am doing. We had already thought of what kind of shots we wanted to do during the preliminary filming, for the task but never expected the amount of takes it took to perfect the shot. This evidently helped me during the official production filming because it helped me think of different shots to make and how to do them.

Preliminary 180 Degree

Match-on-Action

This is when a shot shows continuity from one shot, to the other. It is important because the audience must know what is going on in which moment and if it does not follow the last shot, then it would confuse the audience because they wouldn't understand what is going on in the film.

We used this in both films, We used this so that the audience could understand why there is a sudden change in atmosphere, their enigmas would be created. Such as in our Grindylow, if there were no cuts and it was all a continuation from one shot, then there would be no meaning to the story and the irrelevance would confuse the audience and lure them to having it instead of enjoy it.
Shots

There were many shots used in both the preliminary and the production of filming. Main ones were the esablishing shot and the Close ups. The close ups were used to show the expression on someone's face because from that you could tell exactly what their going through.

Beneath is the picture of an Establishing shot from the preliminary task. We used this to show exactly where the two girls are walking, the fact that their uniform is visible and there is an fire alarm on the right wall instantly tells the audience that they are in a school.
Preliminary Task
In the final product of our film, we decided to set the location exactly in school. This was because we wanted the film to be somewhere it wouldnt' be expected to be. The genre does initially imply what the film would roughly be like but still there are bits and pieces of the film that the audience themselves have to figure it out.
The Grindylow
The close ups we used in both the preliminary task and the final product we to show the expressions on the characters face because that showed the mood and feeling of the person.

The picture above shows me, the expression is that I am talking but I was talking about enjoying a subject that is quite hard, my face is bright and gloomy and it shows that I am in a good mood and that for now nothing is wrong with me, or my mood.

The image above shows our protagonist looking around to see where his boss had gone as he suddenly diasppeared. The expression on his face shows that he is somewhat confused and scared because he doesn't know how his boss has gone and how he went so quick. We decided to use this shot because we thought that the audience would understand why the charater's expressions are weird and our of the ordinary. His face may also inform the audience that something bad may happen and he is frightened of this.

Evaluation Question 5 - How did you attract/ address your audience?

Below is the movie annotated; describing how it attracted the audience.

The below commentary is off video annotation:

Athe the start of the film, the use of non-diegetic sound straight away implies and foreshadows something horrible to happen. The atmosphere is tense as the Main Character is speaking to his wife, diegetic, is creates tension as it is not clear what is going on and how he suddenly has changed into a Janitor's suit? This reached out to the audience as a surprise as it was unexpected that he would do this. The Janitor is quite young, reflecting on the age certification of 15 as they are also young people, which would have attracted the audience and made them want to watch it more.

As the main character goes to the Janitor's cupboard, it is expected what he would do but the tap running noise is somewhat suspicious, again, telling the audience that something is not right and it in fact very unusual. Creating a sense of tension in the atmosphere. Suddenly he sees keys on the floor, the 5-6 second shot of the character looking at the key shows that he did not find that normal showing that the audience themselves would not find it normal. Then suddenly a man appears with an angry face indicating to his watch that the janitor must finish his job soon, relieving the audience for a few seconds but as soon as the radio cuts off, the man has disappeared, this creates more tension and the tension is also increased in the audience's mind.

The radio cuts off completely, something is definitle not right, the audience at this point would not expect what happens next. The janitor goes to the radio and tries to fiddle with it, suddenly hears a noise, the taps are running again. Enigma's are created; but he just closed the taps? No one went back there to open them as no one is supposed to be here? How did it happen? He closes them this time making sure that it won't occur again closing the door which is a predictable thing to do, as the audience would assume so, and suddenly he's found back inside the dark room but something has pulled him in. This would give the audience a sense of terror as it was completely unexpected, the enigma's created would be like this; How did he get pulled in? We just saw no one was there, what pulled it in? Why did the tap run again? Why did he not scream? The radio came back on? Why did it turn off? And how? Etc.

Overall, many different elements of the product gives something to look forward to and always created tension, breaking if off and building the same tension recurrently. This attracts the audience as they want to see what they expect, making them want to watch it more.

Evaluation Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your Media product?

As my product's age restriction is limited to 15, my audience would be the age of 15 and above, looking at teenagers and young adults. My group and I thought long and hard about the age certification of our movie and we thought 15 was best because of the type of movie it is and since there is nothing gruesome or too terrifying, the age was appropriate. The reason why age 15 is better then 12 is because it may be terrifying enough to give nightmares to younger aged people and we did not want that to occur and so to be safe we went with 15.

The two images below show two people who are possible audiences for our Media product. The young girl, 17,  loves to watch movies and is easily frightened by anything, especially thriller movies. And on the right is a young boy, 18, who also loves to watch movies and is very critical of them.

The type of music genre she is into are rock, pop, hip hop and rnb. She loves to shop in Selfridges, House of Fraser, Debenhams, Miss Selfridge and ASOS the website. This girl's specialty is to watch a movie as soon as it comes out. She would watch all genres of film and is passionate about each individual one. She does not have specific taste but her favourite type is Thriller, Psycho Thriller. If she does not go to the movies, she would buy them on dvd from shops and websites such as HMV, Blockbuster and Lovefilm.com. These few sources can be used as a choice of where to sell our product to the public.

This boy loves hip hop, rnb, and pop, the reason why is because of the style of the music, it really makes him enjoy it. He loves to shop in shops such as Republic, Debenhams, Selfridges, Nike and JD Sports. This boy is also really into movies, especially thriller, horror types of movies. His understanding of a thriller film is that is has to make someone jump and it has to be completely unexpected. He could be part of our audience as our movie involved something unexpected and suspense is built to create that. Similar to the girl above, he would either watch the movie in the cinema's or buy them on dvd if he's not seen it. He, similarly, would buy the films from the popular websites/ shops such as HMV, Lovefilm.com and Blockbuster.

I feel that my Media product could be shown to the audience of 15 years of age and above through means of selling. Such as selling tickets to watch it in the cinemas, or selling dvd's or electronic/ online copies in shops or online. I could use the Cinema, HMV, Lovefilm.com and Blockbuster, as they are high in demand of movies from the current public, to advertise and show our product and to get feedback from the public to know how they found it, and see what improvements I could make in order to make it better.

Evaluation Question 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What does a production company do?

A production company are responsible for the protection, completion, concept and plot of a film. They are legally and financially responsible for everything involved in the process of that film. It deals with marketing, finance, pre and post production, budget, schedule, location/ props and sound of the film.

My logo and company name is 'Coldblood Productions' - the reason for this was because of the plot of the film and the genre of it. It is at the start of our film, where there is eerie sounds that reflects the company name and logo. We chose the name 'Coldblood' because of the genre Thriller. It has aspects of some blood and when a person thinks of cold blood, they would think of a dead body or something very dull, dark, scary and deadly. This emphasises the name of our production and the nature behind it. The fact that the logo is red, pointed and chilled as if it were frozen reflects the whole idea of a thriller genre.

This is the Final product of our logo that I made.
At the beginning of our film, there are credits shown of those involved in the film itself and the production of it. The fact that there are a 3- 5 seconds pauses inbetween each credit shown, means that the audience get a climpse of who specifically worked in the film, they won't get confused by the names shown as they can see it clearly stated on the screen during those pauses. The credits were; 'A MARIAM NAWAB Film', 'Filmed by Chloe Wakeling', 'Edited by Ruheet Hasnath', 'Directed by Mariam Nawab', starring, 'Carl Caperina', 'Raman Bahra' and 'Mariam Nawab'. The colour of the credits differ from white and red. Most of the credits are red, to symbolise the use of genre, Thriller and the white ones are used to contradict that.

The credit - 'Directed by Mariam Nawab'
What is a Film Distributor? And who would distribute your film?

A film distributor is a company that is responsible in itself, in releasing a film to the public either in the theatre - cinema, or on a DVD or something as such, for home playing. They can do this directly depending on whether they own the theatre of network, or they can do it through sub-distributors of theatre exhibitors. The possible distributors for our film could be Virgin TV, Sky Showcase or Lionsgate, a thriller franchise. The reason why these may be our distributors is because they are very popular and are viewed at a high rate, this means that if our film were to be advertised on these then it will increase the chance of gainig publicity in terms of existance, as a production. Lionsgate is well-known for it's thriller work and the fact that they may associate themselves with our film has its advantages because they have distributed popular and common movies such as SAW saga, The Condemned, Rambo, The Last Exorcism etc. These movies are very popularly watched by a lot of people and if our film were to be shown by them, then we would also gain popularity and our viewings will increase intensively. The stores in which the DVD for this film can be sold in, HMV, Tesco, Argos, Blockbuster, Lovefilm.com and Sainsbury's. The reason why these few would sell them is because these are also very popular and high in demand in terms of the media and, specifically HMV, if they were to sell our film, we would gain a big profit and our target audience would be happy because of the age certification.

Another distributor could be New Line Cinema, this is because they are well known for their epic and outsanding movies such as Lord of the Rings Trilogy, A nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and many more Thriller movies. As our film is a Thriller movie, they can distribute it and it may be a guarantee that we will get a lot of viewers because of this distributor's past work. The funding for out film most likely would come from these two company's because of their work and how the public acknowledge them.

NewLines Cinema, as our Distributor.

Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I'm going to be comparing a character from my Film to a character from a film that has similar aspects in it. The film I will be comparing my film to is the Grudge, the character Yoko.

Percy From the film 'The Grindylow'
Percy: This character is our protagonist in my film. He is an innocent person who doesn't enjoy his life because of the suffering with the wife at home and lying to her especially about his work life. He supposedly works at an office but his wife doesn't know that he is a cleaner in a school elsewhere.

In the film he is the protagonist, a cleaner who comes to work everyday and cleans, lies to his wife and has new experiences. This is similar to Yoko from the Grudge because she is also a cleaner. And from just that, the audience can understand how the two films relate in terms of their plot and also their film themed genre which it Thriller.

Yoko from the film 'Grudge'

Yoko: This is a girl who cleans for a living and is a carer too. She, similar to Percy in the Grindylow, are somewhat being haunted or chased after something that wants them. They both are protagonists because they are against that something that is after them, showing their vulnerability.

Similarities of Percy and Yoko

  •  In the Grindylow, Percy is the protagonist and from watching the film, he shows how the film comes about, what revolves around the plot of the movie, how everything pieces together and how things don't go according to plan.
  • In the Grudge, Yoko shows the audience herself with her actions and personality, how the plot comes about, what will happen in future as small hints from the film implies that something bad might actually happen, also what kind of movie it is and how it is what it is, a Thriller.
  • Their death/ disappearance is similar because of the technique used to emphasise their death, the grabbing of a hand. This is similar because both hands are hardly seen and no one realises exactly what it is and from that the audience can see the similarity between the two films.
  • They both have the aesthetic innocence because of the way their personality's are, the way they are around others, Percy and his Boss. And the way they behave towards a situation, they both flinch when something bad happens and also have that sense of insecurity, that something is after them but they don't fully know what.
  • The fact that the radio in the Grindylow cuts off is similar to the phone landline that cuts off in the Grudge. Both of these effects add tension and suspense to the atmosphere, therefore building up the climax of both their deaths, which is emphasised as these few errors/ problems occur during the rest of the films.
  • Finally, their death and disappearance build up. This is similar because they both are alone and confused when it occurs. Percy is alone and the atmosphere and mood of his surroundings start to change, things are out of the ordinary. Percy then, from what everyone else would know, disappears. Similar to the Grudge when the girl Yoko disappears.
    Differences of Percy and Yoko
    • Percy is only a cleaner in the film, who lives a life full of lies, to his wife and from the film it seems that he is depressed with his life. On the other hand, Yoko is also a cleaner but also a carer, which adds to Percy's job.
    •  Their clothing and style of it is different, Percy has to change into a jumpsuit because of the lie he fixes upon his wife that he works at the office. But, Yoko wears an apron and normal casual clothes underneath because her job isn't a lie to her loved ones.
    • The location of the film is different because for the Grindylow, Percy is located walking down the corridor in a school. In the Grudge, Yoko is located in a house, this differs in terms of location but the plot of the films are quite similar.
